Our innovation model
Innovation, a strategic pillar for Iberdrola
For more than two decades, Iberdrola has consolidated a business model based on continuous investment in R&D&I, which guides our strategy and enables us to anticipate the challenges of the energy sector.

Iberdrola’s R&D and innovation goals are consistently clear:
To drive innovation and sustainable technology development across the entire value chain, aligning with key drivers of global electrification, thereby building a more electrified, safer, healthier, and sustainable energy and mobility model for humanity.
We create long-term value by continuously optimizing processes and products while significantly reducing our environmental impact.
As the European Commission has noted, it is this long-term, systematic, and value-chain-wide commitment to innovation that makes Iberdrola one of the world’s leading private energy companies in R&D and innovation investment.
In 2024, Iberdrola’s investment in R&D and innovation exceeded €400 million, a record high; it projects cumulative R&D and innovation investment to exceed €7 billion by 2030, with an annual target investment of €550 million for 2030.
Innovative Supply Chain Platform: From "Technological Innovation" to "Industry Collaborative Innovation"
1️⃣While continuously increasing its R&D investment, Iberdrola has further upgraded its innovation from single technology development to an innovative supply chain model covering the entire new energy industry chain, and has officially established—
Iberdrola Innovation Supply Chain Platform
This is a comprehensive industrial platform that integrates R&D, manufacturing, engineering, construction, operation and maintenance, finance and service resources, with Ibidora’s global new energy projects as the core carrier.
2️⃣What is a platform?
The innovative supply chain platform is an innovative collaborative platform that integrates “technology, projects, suppliers, service providers and users” into the same system, based on Iberdrola New Energy Base Stations and Projects.
What content has the platform integrated?
The innovative supply chain platform spans the entire lifecycle of new energy projects, including but not limited to:
New Energy Project R&D and Demonstration Bases: Iberdrola global project cluster encompassing wind power, photovoltaics, energy storage, and smart grids.
Equipment and Technology Supply Chain: Core equipment, system integration, and digital solutions.
Engineering and Service System: Construction, operation and maintenance, testing, upgrades, and intelligent management.
Financial and Subscription Mechanisms: Opening up real new energy base station projects to platform users in a compliant and transparent manner.
Industry Collaboration and Ecosystem Cooperation: Linking upstream and downstream service industries to jointly participate in the creation of new energy value.
3️⃣What can users do on the innovative supply chain platform?
On Iberdrola innovative supply chain platform, users are no longer just “bystanders,” but can:
✅Subscribe to Iberdrola renewable energy base station projects
✅ Participate in the construction of real, traceable renewable energy infrastructure
✅ Share in the long-term, stable value returns of renewable energy projects
✅ Indirectly participate in the global energy transition and sustainable development process
4️⃣Why is it called an “Innovative Supply Chain”?
Because this is not a traditional supply chain, but rather:
Driven by innovation as its core force
Based on new energy projects as its physical foundation
Integrating the entire service industry through a platform approach
Achieving a closed loop of synergy between technology, capital, and industry
Innovation doesn’t just happen in the laboratory; it continuously occurs between projects, the supply chain, and users through a platform mechanism.
5️⃣ Summary of the Platform’s Core Value
For Iberdrola:
👉 Accelerate the implementation of innovative achievements, improving the efficiency and sustainability of new energy projects.
For industry partners:
👉 Access to the innovative supply chain systems of leading global energy groups.
For users:
👉 Participate in real new energy projects and share the long-term value brought by energy transition.
An innovative effort built around three main pillars

Electrification in all sectors, including difficult-to-decarbonise sectors such as transport and industrial heat.
- Electricity generation. We research disruptive technologies to increase efficiency and improve the integration of renewables and storage into the energy system, strengthening sustainability, security and competitiveness.
- Energy distribution and management. We are committed to a more flexible, multidirectional, digital and resilient power system through the development of smart grids, energy-management tools and digital technologies.
- Electrification of demand. We are supporting the electrification of the economy by developing new, more sustainable products, services and consumption models tailored to customer needs, particularly in the areas of mobility, industry and buildings.

Electrification in all sectors, including difficult-to-decarbonise sectors such as transport and industrial heat.
- Iberdrola Innovation Centres, in the form of an international and interconnected network that fosters technological capabilities, collaboration and talent attraction to address the challenges of the energy sector from multiple perspectives.
- Iberdrola Universities Programme (Ü), a commitment to knowledge and talent transfer among university students, scholarship holders, professors, researchers and Iberdrola employees, all sharing the same goal: to help shape the future of energy through innovative solutions.
- PERSEO innovation programme, collaborating with startups and participating in, or creating, new companies to develop disruptive business models, promote collaboration and synergies, and encourage access to future technologies and businesses.
- Promotion of partnerships and new business models for the electrification of the economy, involving all players in the electricity sector’s value chain.
- Launch of innovative initiatives within associations and multidisciplinary working groups, in which we collaborate with our suppliers and other stakeholders in our innovation ecosystem.

Innovation culture
- Skills development through continuous training, integrating innovation into all educational content and promoting the organisation and/or participation in events, courses, seminars and publications.
- Intrapreneurship initiatives to promote internal talent, creativity and entrepreneurial spirit among Group employees, providing them with the necessary tools and resources.
- Promotion of an innovative culture that permeates the entire organisation and fosters motivating work environments, encouraging and recognising new ideas, knowledge sharing and innovative practices both within the Group and in collaboration with the innovation ecosystem.
